Self care, Self nourish, Self compassion

Our original Wellness Workshop was held in 2015, at the Angus Inn, Lower Hutt. This workshop was developed for early childhood centre staff from concerns around staff sickness and stress levels and staff not finding the time to look after themselves. The day used the Mental Health FoundationsFive Ways To Wellbeing as the foundation for the workshops content. The purpose of the workshop was to provide knowledge, tools, and resources to support staff to make informed decisions about their self-care, and in turn help them to be positive role models for the children in their care.

We successfully ran the workshop for early childhood centre staff again in 2016, 2017 with two seminars held in 2018. The name and venue changed. These events were now known as the Nurturing Mind and Body Wellbeing Seminars, held at the beautiful Silverstream Retreat. These Seminars were on a Saturday rather than a weekday so more staff from the same centre could attend, which proved incredibly valuable as they supported each other and positive change in their centre environments after attending. The numbers of participants grew each year, with over 90 participants in November 2018. Extensive evaluation of the seminars were completed which helped us continually review and updated the content each year, leading to more valuable sessions and professional events.

In February 2020 we gave the seminar a complete transformation. This wellbeing seminar was called “Hinengaro, Tinana, Wairua: Your Mana Atua Journey” held at Boulcott Farm Heritage Golf Club. The seminar was limited to 45 spaces, creating an inclusive, safe feel. The day was shorter, finishing at 1pm and included workshop sessions where participants’ put their learnings into actions to take back to their centres to collectively make positive change in their environment and support each other with individual goals. The feedback on the new format was positive, with 100% of participants stating they would recommend the seminar to others.
