The Wairarapa ‘Big Latch On 2017’ celebrating World Breastfeeding Week was held on Friday August 4 at the Carterton Events Centre. Sarah Taylor-Waitere, Regional Public Health Wairarapa coordinated the event which was well attended with 109 mummies.

Sarah Taylor-Waitere acknowledged the wonderful support of the Wairarapa Breastfeeding Committee which involves members from Wairarapa Maternity, Plunket, Breast Friends, Whaiora, La Lache League and Parents Centre.

"Overwhelming sponsorship was received from local businesses within Wairarapa and other national distributors so we were able to gift mothers who registered for The Big Latch On with their own goodie bags and spot prize.

There were stalls on the day giving away free knits and infant clothing by Whaiora, free information on car seat safety, disposable nappies and the dangers by Plunket, and information sharing by other local baby friendly services.

A delicious morning tea was supplied by New World Carterton and Plunket for the mums and with the wonderful help of the Holdsworth Lions Ladies our mothers were well taken care of with a hot cuppa and bite to eat", says Sarah.

The event received an overwhelming number of compliments and feedback on the day, these were all positive and what clearly stood out was the friendly community atmosphere and the opportunity for mums to get together, build confidence and celebrate breastfeeding.
